Pope Francis Mysteries

(Revised February 1, 2022)

The Catholic Church is the embodiment of Catholicism.  It also is the institution headed by the Pope.  Catholics pray for the two to be one, and search for peace when they’re not one.  They’re not one when the institution’s words and actions fail to be one.

Jesus told people how to live righteously and he showed them how.  He said “Come, and you will see” and “Follow me”.  [John 1:35-43]

Pope Francis tells people how to live righteously, but doesn’t always show them how.  He tells people to live in ways that differ from how he lives.

It’s difficult to understand why Pope Francis slapped and scowled at a woman who touched him as he gloriously paraded among the people in Saint Peter’s Square.

It’s difficult to understand why Pope Francis preaches against border walls from within the Vatican’s walls.

It’s difficult to understand why Pope Francis preaches against restricted immigration from within the no-immigration Vatican.

It’s difficult to understand why Pope Francis preaches against environmental pollution without first banning private jet travel by the Holy See.

It’s difficult to understand why Pope Francis preaches that abortion is murder and continues to serve Holy Communion to Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden.

It’s difficult to understand why Pope Francis preaches tax policy: “taxation is a sign of legality and justice. It must prompt the redistribution of wealth”.  It’s difficult to understand because Jesus taught that tax policy has nothing to do with doing God’s work.  When Jesus was asked “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”, Jesus replied “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”  [Mark 12:14,17]

Catholics understand and appreciate the value of mystery.  However, would that Pope Francis presented fewer mysteries.
