Free Speech Is in the Eye of the Beholder

Free speech!  Free speech!  Shout it from the highest rooftops.  Everybody does.  Quick … what does it mean?  Do Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump agree on what it means?  Obviously not, not if we’re talking about the Steele Dossier.  Do Dave Chappelle and Joe Biden agree on what it means?  Obviously not, not if we’re talking about saying “nigger”.  So, what does it mean?

Well, the simple truth is something we almost all know, but is something we almost all deny.  The simple truth is free speech is in the eye of the beholder.  The FBI says parents who protect their children by criticizing school boards too loudly are domestic terrorists, and silences their free speech.  The FBI has no problem with Cardi B’s free speech right to sell WAP to school children.  See how easy it is to define free speech any which way you want?

Countless loud voices called on Twitter to censor Donald Trump and his supporters.  Now that Elon Musk bought Twitter, they preach that he should not censor them.

In 1977, the Supreme Court declared it un-American to prevent Nazis from marching, in uniform, waving flags, displaying swastikas, through the streets of a Jewish community in America.  [National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie, 432 U.S. 43 (1977)]  Now loud voices declare it un-American for a community to display a statue of Thomas Jefferson or Abraham Lincoln.  When the people who rule our lives prefer Nazis to the Founding Fathers, you. know America has a problem.

I voted for Barak Obama because he promised to close Guantanamo, promised to not use Presidential Signing Statements, and promised to not bomb nations unless they presented an imminent threat to America.  Were his promises free speech?  Should they be?

The people who rule our lives are clueless about what free speech means.  Our Founding Fathers knew what it means.  Read Common Sense.  Read about the 1800 presidential election.  Free speech must include minority opinions, unpleasant words, and criticism of the people who rule our lives.  If it doesn’t, then it only protects something that needs no protection.

America is spiraling down the rabbit hole of Joe Biden’s unity, but don’t worry.  Don’t get upset the next time you hear a politician or pundit call someone a racist or Nazi or White Supremacist or misogynist or bigot or hater or sexist or any other of the every-day nasty names that flood our senses.  Instead, smile inside yourself and celebrate the fact that the loud voices have nothing intelligent to say.  They can’t hold on forever.  Respect their free speech right to display who they really are.
