“First they came for …”

Martin Niemöller, a German Lutheran pastor, wrote this post-World-War-II confessional:

First they came for the Communists, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me, And there was no one left, To speak for me

May the time never come when we write this confessional:

First they came for the Catholics, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Catholic

Then they came for the Deplorables, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Deplorable

Then they came for the Whites, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a White

Then they came for the Jews, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for the grammar school children, And I did not speak out, Because I did not have a child in grammar school

Then they came for the voters, And I did not speak out, Even though I was a voter

Then they came for me, And there was no one left, To speak for me
